Managing your tax affairs during or after a disaster

When disasters such as storms, floods or wildfires occur, the damage can have a devastating impact on individuals and businesses. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) understands that the primary concerns of those affected are their families, homes, businesses and communities. If you are affected by a disaster and fall behind with filing your return or paying amounts that you owe, or need help receiving tax credit or benefit cheques, there are ways we can help you.

When you’re unable to receive your tax credit or benefit cheques

We know that many Canadians rely on CRA tax credit and benefit payments, and we’re here to help them get the money that they’re entitled to as quickly as possible. During a disaster, residents may be evacuated from their homes or experience a delay in the mail delivery of cheques from the CRA.

If you are unable to receive your tax credit or benefit cheques and require immediate assistance, you can contact us at 1-800-959-8281. In some cases, we may be able to issue a duplicate payment. To avoid future delays, you should Sign up for Direct Deposit.

People affected by delays can also visit the Canada Post website for updates on their mail delivery: Canada Post delivery service alerts.

When your books and records have been destroyed

If your books and records have been destroyed, you need to call us to discuss your unique situation.

  • Individuals call 1-800-959-8281
  • Businesses call 1-800-959-5525
  • Charities call 1-800-267-2384

When you can’t file or pay on time

It’s important to file on time if you can. This will ensure that you continue to receive any tax credits or benefits you are entitled to. If you file or pay late because you were affected by a disaster and were charged penalties and interest, you can send a request for relief: Cancel or waive penalties and interest.

When you are unable to pay a debt

You might need extra time to pay a debt while you cope with a disaster. You may be able to schedule a series of payments in My Account or My Business Account: When you owe money – collections at the CRA.

You can also call the Debt Management Call Centre to set up a payment arrangement: 1‑888-863-8657.
