Non-Resident TeleReply

This automated telephone service lets you report a nil remittance of non-resident withholding tax. The service offers the following benefits:

  • no paper remittance vouchers to mail
  • immediate confirmation that an account has been updated

To use this service, call 1-866-971-4644, and follow the instructions.

To report a nil remittance for your payroll deductions, please call 1-800-959-2256.

Who can use Non-Resident TeleReply?

Non-Resident TeleReply is available in Canada and the United States. To use the service, you have to be a Canadian payer, agent, or authorized representative, and the following conditions apply:

  • you have a nil remittance of non-resident tax to report
  • you are no longer making payments and would like to permanently discontinue the account
  • tax does not have to be deducted from amounts paid to non-residents
  • your correspondence from the Canada Revenue Agency shows the correct name and non-resident account number

You cannot use Non-Resident TeleReply if any of the following apply:

  • you want to report a remittance of non-resident withholding tax
  • tax has to be deducted from amounts paid to non-residents
  • the non-resident tax account has been closed
  • you want to change your response after receiving a confirmation number

Before you call

Have this information available:

  • non-resident tax account number
  • reason you are reporting a nil remittance
  • date of the next payment to a non-resident

To make sure your privacy is protected, do not use a cordless or cellular phone. This service does not work with rotary phones.

Hours of operation

Non-Resident TeleReply is available from 6 am to 9 pm, Eastern time.

Using Non-Resident TeleReply

To use this service, call 1-866-971-4644, and follow the instructions.

Enter the non-resident tax account number, starting with the third letter. Do not enter the first two letters (NR).

You will have three options to report the nil remittance:

  • you know the date of the next payment to a non-resident
  • you do not know the date of the next payment to a non-resident
  • the account holder no longer pays non-residents

When you enter a date, use the following format:

  • year: four digits
  • month: two digits
  • day: two digits

To repeat a message, press the star key (*).

At the end of the call, write down the your confirmation number and keep it for your records. If you hang up before receiving your confirmation number, the account will not be updated.

If you have trouble with the service, you have two other ways to report a nil remittance:

  • mail the completed non-resident tax information request to Sudbury Tax Centre
  • call the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-855-284-5946 (from Canada or the United States) or 613-940-8499 (from anywhere else)
