About Non-Resident Withholding Tax

Non-Resident Withholding Tax is a section in your CRA account that lets non-resident tax account holders view and update their information. Non-resident tax accounts are used to remit Part XIII tax withheld on amounts paid or credited to non-residents of Canada.

Who can use Non-Resident Withholding Tax

Individuals or business owners (including partners, directors, and officers) who have a non-resident tax account (account number format NRX123456) and who have registered for a CRA account can use this service.

Signing in on behalf of someone else

If you want to access Non-Resident Withholding Tax on behalf of someone else (including friends and family members), you must be their authorized representative and use Represent a Client from your CRA account.

How to access Non-Resident Withholding Tax

To access the Non-Resident Withholding Tax section for the first time, you must have a non-resident tax account number (NR number).

  1. Sign in to your CRA account
  2. On the Welcome page, select Add account
  3. Select Non-resident tax account
  4. Enter your 9-digit NR number
  5. After getting your confirmation, return to the Welcome page and select your non-resident tax account

  • Manage address
  • Manage phone number
  • View remitting requirements
  • Make a remittance
  • Provide a nil remittance
  • View and pay account balance
  • View account transactions
  • View mail

  • Manage authorized representatives
  • Submit Documents
  • File an NR4 information return

What's new

Backup multi-factor authentication option

The CRA now offers a backup multi-factor authentication (MFA) method for your CRA account. If you don’t already have one, you will be asked to add a backup MFA method the next time you sign in. You can use either a passcode grid or a third-party authenticator app. You will be able to skip this step.

New digital services

There are new digital services, including ones that let you submit documents and file an NR4 information return online.
