Authorizing a representative (online access)

You can give your representative online access through My Account or, by completing Part 2 Section A of Form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative. You have to provide the RepID if your representative is an individual, the GroupID if your representative is a group, or the Business Number (BN) if your representative is a business.

Once your authorization has been accepted, your representative will be able to deal with the CRA through Represent a Client.

The CRA online services do not have a year-specific option. Therefore, your representative will have access to your tax information for all tax years.

Notes

Online access is not available for trust accounts. Go to Authorizing a representative (no online access) to find out how to authorize a representative for your trust account.

If your representative is a business and you do not identify an individual in that business as your representative, you are authorizing the CRA to deal with anyone from that business.

Instructions for completing Form T1013

If you want to authorize your representative to deal with the CRA online as well as via the telephone, in person and in writing, complete Parts 1, 2A, 3 and 5 of Form T1013.

You must complete a separate Form T1013 for each representative.

To accept your request, the following information is required:

    • Trust name
    • Filer name
    • Account number - at least 1 account number must be present

    • You or your legal representative must sign and date the form. If you are signing and dating this form as a legal representative, tick the appropriate box. If 2 or more legal representatives are acting jointly on the taxpayer's behalf, the signature of each legal representative is required
    • The form must be received by the CRA within 6 months of its signature date. If not, the form will not be processed

RepID / GroupID / Business Number

A RepID is a 7 character alphanumeric code that identifies your representative. If your representative does not have a RepID, they can register for one through Represent a client.

A GroupID is a 6 character alphanumeric code, starting with the letter G, that identifies a group of representatives. The group of representatives can register through Represent a client.

A Business Number (BN) is a 9 digit number that identifies the business that you choose to represent you. The BN must be registered with the Represent a client service to be an online representative.

If you complete 2 or more fields of Form T1013:

  • an individual (RepID) will take precedence over a group (GroupID) or a business (BN)
  • group (GroupID) will take precedence over a business (BN)

If you entered a RepID, provide the name of the individual associated to the RepID. If you entered a GroupID, provide the name of the group associated to the GroupID. If you entered a BN, provide the name of the business associated to the BN.

Enter the level of authorization you want to grant to your representative.

If you give authorization for online access and you have a "care of" address on your account, a letter will be sent to you to confirm the authorization. Online access will not be granted until you or your legal representative calls the CRA to confirm the authorization for online access.
