Educators – Tax resources and financial literacy

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognizes the importance of financial literacy, especially for vulnerable segments of the population. The CRA offers free educational products to help Canadians better understand the tax system, its benefit programs, their rights, and their obligations. This is all part of the CRA’s commitment to help taxpayers get it right from the start.

Educator-led products

These two educator-led products target secondary school educators and are easy to teach and understand:

Teaching Taxes teaches the basics of taxation and promotes financial literacy. It offers students the practical real-life skill of completing a simple income tax and benefit return, and increases their knowledge of Canada’s tax system. The product is 180 minutes of classroom instruction and student exercises. It can be taught in various subjects including economics, accounting, business, mathematics, consumer education, and social studies, as well as in second language courses.

Responsible Citizenship and Canada’s Tax System explores the relationship between income taxes and quality of life. Topics include: where your tax dollars go; your rights and obligations; and the impact and pitfalls of participating in the underground economy. Educators can choose and customize from 180 minutes of classroom instruction and student exercises.
