Business Registration Online – What you will need

As of May 13, 2024, import and export program account (RM) registrations and maintenance is only available through the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) Client Portal. The CRA no longer provides these services.

3. What you will need

If you are not certain if you have to register, go to When you need a business number or Canada Revenue Agency program accounts.

Information you need to request a business number online

Personal information

If you are a business owner or third-party requester, you must provide all of the following:

  • last name
  • social insurance number (SIN)
  • date of birth
  • personal postal code (where you live)footnote 1

If you are a representative, you will need to provide your RepID. For more information on representatives, go to Represent a Client.

Basic business information

You must provide all of the following:

  • business name
  • business number (if this business already has one)
  • type of business or organization (for example: sole proprietor, partnership, corporation, domestic worker, trust)
  • name and SIN of owners as required
  • physical address
  • mailing address (if different from the physical address)
  • description of major business activity

Information you need to register for program accounts

Corporation income tax program account

You must have all of the following on hand:

  • corporation name
  • certificate number
  • date of incorporation
  • jurisdiction

You will also need all of the following if it differs from the basic business information above:

  • mailing address
  • physical address

GST/HST program account

You must have all of the following on hand:

  • amount of your annual worldwide and domestic GST/HST taxable supplies
  • fiscal year-end
  • effective date of registration
  • reporting period

You will also need all of the following if it differs from the basic business information above:

  • mailing address
  • physical address

Payroll deductions program account

You must have all of the following on hand:

  • date employees receive their first wages
  • months covered for payroll of employees' wages
  • type of pay period (for example, weekly, quarterly)
  • number of employees
  • payroll service name (if any)
  • country of parent or affiliate, if you have a foreign owned corporation
  • name of franchisor (if any)
    • country of franchise's head office

  • mailing address
  • physical address

Registered charity program account

You must have all of the following on hand:

  • type of program account
    • charity
    • Canadian amateur athletic association (CAAA)
    • national arts service organization (NASO)

Information returns program account

You must have all of the following on hand:

  • type of program account
    • T5 group
    • tax-free savings account (TFSA)
    • T5018
    • partnerships
  • effective date of registration
