If you’re applying for registration as a charity, or as a registered Canadian amateur athletic association (RCAAA), note that the rules related to political activities were replaced by new rules related to public policy dialogue and development activities (PPDDA).

To reflect the new rules, the online application form will be revised for November 2019. Until then, follow the instructions below as you complete your online form.

  • Apply to be a Registered Charity under the Income Tax Act

    In the section on Political activities of the online application form, answer the first three questions as if they read as follows:

    Activity that supports or opposes a political party or candidate

    Q. A charity may not directly or indirectly support or oppose any political party or candidate for public office. Does your organization agree that it will not take part in any activity that directly or indirectly supports or opposes any political party or candidate for public office?
    ☐ Yes
    ☐ No

    Public policy dialogue and development activities

    A charity may carry on public policy dialogue and development activities in furtherance of its stated charitable purposes. These activities generally involve seeking to influence the law, policies, or decision of a government, whether in Canada or a foreign country. For more information, see Guidance CG-027, Public policy dialogue and development activities by charities.

    Q. Will your organization carry on public policy dialogue and development activities?
    ☐ Yes
    ☐ No

    If you select yes:

    Q. Describe these public policy dialogue and development activities and how they will help achieve your organization’s stated charitable purposes.

    Then, as the notion of political activities is no longer relevant, answer the next question by ticking the last box for Other and writing "Not applicable" on the Specify below line, and answer the last question by entering a "0".

    Q. Select the resources that your organization will devote to political activities:

    ☐ Paid employees
    ☐ Volunteers
    ☐ Financial resources
    ☐ Physical resources (such as property)
    ☒ Other
