Narrator: Welcome to the overview of the CVITP learning guide. This is a resource designed to help new and returning CVITP volunteers prepare tax returns for eligible individuals.
The content of the learning guide is organized in two main parts:
- Volunteer guidelines, where you can find program related information [callout surrounds the section] and
- CRA tax information, which includes information specific to taxes for eligible individuals who get help through the program [callout surrounds the section]
The Related items section [callout surrounds the section], at the bottom of the page, includes useful resources such as:
- case studies to practice with, a video gallery, forms, job aids, factsheets and useful contacts and links for volunteers
We strongly encourage new CVITP volunteers to review the entire learning site before they start preparing tax returns.

Narrator: Let’s return to the homepage.

In this demo, we’ll select the Getting authorization to electronically submit the tax return section [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link].

Narrator: To read the instructions, you have 3 options for completing the signing of section II of TIS60 [callout surrounds the options].
Let’s select ‘Send a password protected email [option selected and arrow pointing to it]. This will open up the procedures related to this specific topic [callout surrounds the text appearing on page].
Note, to view the Sample of generic email, click on the expandable item [callout surrounds the tab].
Throughout this learning guide, you’ll come across various specialized terms. Here is an example.
To view a definition of each of these terms, click on the hyperlinks [callouts surround the links].

Narrator: Now, let’s have a look at the second part of this training site: the CRA tax information.
To find out about the latest tax-related updates, we encourage you to review the information on the What’s new this filing season - tax return page [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link].

Narrator: This section provides you with an overview of tax topics volunteers may come across and screen-by-screen instructions on how to input specific income, deductions, credits and other expenses into the UFile software. Here, you will also find information on identification and marital status [callouts surround each section as the narration goes].
Let’s explore this section more closely.

Narrator: This page includes tips for filling out identification sections, identifies the mandatory information and gives definitions for marital status types.
Let’s go back to the Tax guide for volunteers page and click on Find a tax topic [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link].

Narrator: This page provides a complete index of all CVITP-related tax topics and allows you to filter the information in two ways:
- by selecting one of the radio buttons from the list of topics [callout surrounds the buttons], or
- by typing a term or phrase in the text box above the table [callout surrounds the field]
The filter options in the topic list are based on clienteles volunteers may help such as: newcomers, persons with disabilities, students, etc [arrows pointing to the topics].
To access the information, select one of the topics from the list [callout surrounds the section]. Press the reset filter button to start a new search [arrow points to the reset button].
To sort the lists of topics in the table, click on one of the arrows at the top of each column [arrows point to the columns]. This will reorganize the list into ascending or descending order for the line number, name, UFile instructions and type.
Once you select a topic, the tax-related information shows up in the table below [callout surrounds the section].
To read the theory information, click on the links listed under the Line name [callout surrounds the section].
To view the screen-by-screen guide instructions, click on the UFile instructions link within the table [callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link; Pension and savings plans page opens and closes].
Note, you can also view or even print the PDF version of the UFile instructions [arrows pointing to the links and cursor opens the PDF; Pension and saving plans page opens and callout surrounds the print icon and arrow points to it].

Narrator: Let’s go back to the Tax guide for volunteers section.
So far, you’ve seen how you can filter and access tax-related information on the Find a tax topic page.
You can also view the same information without using the filter page. Instead, visit the 2 sections:
- types of income, deductions and credits, and
- UFile instructions by tax situation [callouts surround each section]
Let’s take a quick look at each.
First, click on Types of income, deductions, and credits [cursor clicks on link].

Narrator: Then, click on any of the links within this section to view a full list of CVITP tax-related theory topics regarding income, credits, deductions and other items [arrows pointing to the topics].

Let’s take a closer look at the Practice with case studies page.

Narrator: Here, you’ll find a list of scenario-based examples that will help you practice preparing tax returns using mock background information and tax slips for individuals and families.
For example, let’s click on Claiming medical expenses [scrolling down to the topic, callout surrounds the section and cursor clicks on the link to open the page].
Each case study starts with a pre-test question on existing knowledge.
Every case study presents instructions to follow when practicing in UFile. Then, you receive background information followed by the tax situation.
Once you’ve completed the case study, review your results by opening the PDF document.
Finally, consider the takeaway points at the end of the page [callouts surround each section on the page as the narration goes].
