Cayla: Hello, my name is Cayla.

This is part 2 of our demonstration of the UFile CVITP tax preparation software.

Image on screen: Title: Outline; the key topics appear to the left as the narration goes; to the right, the UFile logo shows a white, half maple leaf against a red background and black letters reading UFile

Cayla: In part 1, we went over the UFile software installation requirements and layout overview.

In this demonstration, we’ll take a closer look at the Interview tab in the tax software. This tab includes the identification section, current address, CRA questions, EFile and Interview setup.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Family Head Identification screen

Cayla: Now, let’s resume where we left off in our first demonstration – the Start tab within UFile. We mentioned that once you click on start on a new tax file, the software opens the Identification screen under the Interview tab [callouts surround the tabs Interview and Identification and the screen title, Family Head Identification].

In the identification section, enter the individual’s information [callout surrounds the section].

Family Head is the term used by the tax software to indicate the first individual entered into UFile CVITP [Family Head tab is highlighted against blurred screen].

The second individual entered is referred to as either a spouse or dependant [each tab is highlighted against blurred screen]. Once you enter the individual’s name, it will replace the generic terms used.

Entering identification details may generate additional sections in the left side menu or provide you with tax saving ideas.

For example, when you enter the date of birth for a dependant under 18 [cursor clicks on Dependant while callouts surround the tab and the date of birth field], UFile CVITP will automatically generate a section for Child care in the left side menu [callout surrounds the tab].

Mandatory fields will have a red asterisk on the right of the field description [callout surrounds first field under the Identification section]. All these fields must be completed to get to the Review tab, the Tax return tab, and the EFILE tab [arrows point to each tab in the top menu bar].

Clicking Next at the bottom-right of the screen will save the data entered and bring you to the next page [callout surrounds the Next button]. If any mandatory information is missing, Error messages will appear at the bottom of your screen [callout surrounds the tab]. These will tell you to fill in the required fields.

You will notice that at the top of each page [cursor clicks on Family Head tab], UFile CVITP provides specific instructions for that section [callout surrounds the instructions section]. You should review this information before filling in any fields.

If you select married or common-law spouse in the Identification section [cursor selects Married from the drop down menu and callout surrounds the field generated], UFile CVITP will generate the Spouse interview type screen [callout surrounds the tab in the left side menu].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Type of information you want to provide about your spouse section

Cayla: On the Spouse interview type page, you will be asked: What information will you provide for your spouse? [callout surrounds the question and information field]

If Net income only is selected, UFile will generate the Spouse – basic information section in the left side menu.

If Complete information is selected, you will need to complete a tax return for each spouse. We recommend selecting complete information [field highlighted].

To add the spouse’s profile and begin their Interview tab, click add spouse [tab highlighted and cursor clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Spouse Identification section

Cayla: Add spouse can be found next to the Family Head sub-tab or next to the family head’s name [callout surrounds the tab and an arrow points to it].

To add a dependant, click add dependant [callout surrounds the tab and an arrow points to it]. This is found next to add spouse or next to the spouse’s name.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) questions screen

Cayla: When you reach the Canada Revenue Agency questions section [callout surrounds the CRA questions tab in the left side menu and cursor clicks on it], be sure to complete all fields [callouts surround the language fields].

Selecting English or French will determine what language the tax return will be generated in.

It also determines the language the CRA uses to correspond with the individual [cursor clicks on English from the drop-down menu].

Note, the language you select does not affect the language you choose to work in.

You will notice some fields are defaulted to No [callout surrounds the fields]. Please go over these questions with the individual and adjust the answers as required [cursor scrolling down on page].

Under the Elections Canada section, if you have selected Yes for the question Do you have Canadian citizenship? [callout surrounds the field and cursor clicks on Yes], an additional question will appear [information highlighted]. It will ask the individual if they authorize the CRA to share their information with Elections Canada [callout surrounds the field and cursor clicks on Yes].

Also, complete the Email notifications from CRA section [callout surrounds the section title]. You must indicate whether or not the taxpayer accepts to receive their notice of assessment and notice of reassessment online [acceptance of terms and conditions highlighted]. If the answer is Yes, enter the taxpayer's email address and read the terms and conditions to them [callouts surround the selection and email fields and an arrow points to the terms and conditions].

Next, the individual may have to complete additional questions. These questions will be based on the information entered in the Identification section.

Questions related to residency will be generated for individuals from British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, or Northwest Territories.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Electronic filing – EFILE screen

Cayla: Under the Interview tab, you will find the Electronic filing - EFILE section [callout surrounds the EFILE tab in the left side menu and cursor clicks on it].

This is where you indicate if you will be using the CRA’s Auto-fill my return (AFR) service and EFILE to transmit the tax return.

If you select “yes” [callout surrounds the field] to using the CRA’s Auto-fill my return, an authorization request-signature page will be generated in the Tax Return tab.

If you need help with the AFR service, watch the video tutorial Auto-fill my return demonstration, available on the CVITP learning guide web page in the Auto-fill my return section.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Interview setup screen

Cayla: The Interview setup section [callout surrounds the tab in the left side menu] is where you flag any Specific situations that may apply to the individual [sections are highlighted while scrolling down on page].

Here, you also select the types of income, deductions and/or credits that you will be entering on their tax return.

If you forget to select an item from this screen, you can always go back to the Interview setup to make changes.

Once you have selected the specific situations, click Next [callout surrounds the Next button], and the topics will appear in the left side menu, ready for you to complete.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, T4 and employment income screen

Cayla: When you click on a topic [cursor clicks on T4 and employment income in the left side menu], the related income slips, deductions, and/or credits can be selected by clicking on the plus (+) sign next to each item [callout surrounds the plus sign and cursor clicks on it].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, T4 – Statement of Remuneration Paid screen

Cayla: This will generate data entry pages where income amounts or other required information is provided.

In this example, we selected T4 income earned in any province except Quebec. T4 income appears as a sub-topic under T4 and employment income in the left side menu [callout surrounds the tab].

If you select the T4 income sub-topic, the T4 – Statement of Remuneration Paid page will open [callout surrounds title]. This page displays fields [callout surrounds the fields] that correspond with the boxes found on the T4 information slip [close up image of the T4 slip appears on screen then fades out].

Each slip is entered separately and UFile CVITP automatically calculates the total amounts from all slips.

This means, if an individual has several T4 slips, the software will add these up and report the total amount of employment income on the tax return.

If the information slip has a box that is not shown on the screen, scroll down to the field Other information [callout surrounds the tab in the left side menu and cursor clicks on it] to select additional options.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP 2021, Information from other T-slips screen

Cayla: As you add the issuer’s or employer’s names, they will appear on the left side menu [callout surround the tab and cursor clicks on it]. This makes it easier to identify and review a particular slip.

If you need to change any information on a slip, you can return to it by clicking on its name in the left side menu [callout surrounds T4 income in the left side menu].

If you need to delete a slip, click the minus (-) sign next to the right of the slip [callout surrounds the minus sign and cursor clicks on it; a pop-up window asking ‘Are you sure you want to delete this page? appears on screen while the cursor clicks OK].

Click Next to bring you to the next section [callout surrounds the button].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Other income screen

Cayla: Some situations may not be in the Interview setup section. Instead, they may be under Other income or Other information slips in the left side menu [callout surrounds the tabs].

Take a look at these sections to see if any other situations apply to the individual.

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Other deductions and credits screen

Cayla: The Other deductions and credits section will only appear in the left side menu [callout surrounds the tab] if it is selected in the Interview setup, under Other topics.

This section is where topics such as the Northern residents deduction are located [section is highlighted].

Additional sections, such as provincial or territorial tax and credits, will populate in the left side menu [section highlighted]. These sections are based on the information provided when completing the Identification section [callout surrounds the tab in the left side menu].

Image on screen: UFile CVITP, Ontario tax credits screen

Cayla: In this example, Ontario was the province of residence selected [callout surrounds the tab in the left side menu]. Therefore, the Ontario tax credits section was generated [callout surrounds the section].
