Can you claim the caregiver amount (line 315)?

Answer

You cannot claim the caregiver amount for that dependant.

You have told us:

  • You maintained a dwelling where you and a dependant lived at any time in 2016
  • Your dependant is one of the following persons:
    • your or your spouse's or common-law partner's child or grandchild
    • your or your spouse's or common-law partner's brother, sister, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, parent, or grandparent who was resident in Canada
  • This person was not only visiting you
  • Your dependant meets all of the following conditions. Your dependant must have:
    • been 18 years of age or older at the time he or she lived with you
    • had a net income in 2016 (line 236 of his or her tax return, or the amount it would be if he or she filed a tax return) of less than $20,607 ($22,728 if he or she is eligible for the family caregiver amount)
    • been dependent on you due to an impairment in physical or mental functions, or, if he or she is your or your spouse's or common-law partner's parent or grandparent, born in 1951 or earlier
  • You did not have to make child support payments for this dependant
  • Someone other than you claims an amount for an eligible dependant (line 305) for that dependant
