Netfile

October, 2000

More ways to fileā€¦ More ways to serve you

Encouraged by the success of its Internet tax-filing pilot in the 1999 filing season, the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency will provide the opportunity for virtually every Canadian to file their 2000 income tax return over the Internet.

Clients will get information about NETFILE and their personal Web access code (WAC) in their annual tax package. The WAC will appear under the client's social insurance number. There is no charge to file over the Internet, but clients have to use a commercial tax preparation software, or a Web application, that we have certified for NETFILE.

What are the advantages of using NETFILE?

  • Fast refunds-generally in 2 weeks;
  • Available 7 days a week;
  • No paper return to mail;
  • Secure and confidential; and
  • Immediate confirmation that we have received the return.

We use the same criteria to verify both paper and electronic income tax returns. Clients will need to keep all their tax information slips and documents for six years after they file their tax return, in case we ask to see them. If they file a complete and accurate tax return, and keep all their documents, they will be ready for any review we may do.

To use NETFILE, clients should:

  • Complete their tax return using commercial software, or a Web application, that we have certified;
  • Access the "Ready to file" page from our NETFILE Web site at: www.netfile.gc.ca;
  • Complete the identification section (using the WAC that appears on the personal label on the return, under the social insurance number);
  • Attach and transmit their return; and
  • Keep the confirmation number we provide.
