Your responsibilities

As part of Canada's self-assessment tax system, it is your responsibility to complete a tax return to report your income and calculate your tax payable each year.

Send your return by the deadline

Generally, you have to send your tax return to the Canada Revenue Agency by April 30th. If you send your return late and you have a balance owing, you will be charged a late-filing penalty. You can avoid the penalty by sending your return by the due date, even if you cannot pay your balance owing by April 30th.

Provide accurate and complete information

You must give the Canada Revenue Agency accurate and complete information in order to assess your tax and benefits correctly. If your personal information changes during the year, tell the Canada Revenue Agency as this can affect your benefit payments. This includes changes to your address, marital status or direct deposit.

Pay your balance owing

If you have an amount owing to the Canada Revenue Agency, you should pay it in full to avoid interest and other legal and financial consequences. If you cannot pay the amount in full, you should contact the Canada Revenue Agency to develop a repayment plan.
