The Canada Revenue Agency's responsibilities
The Canada Revenue Agency promotes awareness of the tax laws it administers, so that you can follow those laws. This maintains the fairness and integrity of the Canadian tax system.
Review of tax returns
The Canada Revenue Agency reviews tax returns to make sure the amounts claimed are reported correctly, and are properly supported. If changes are made to your return as a result of a review, you will get a notice that explains the changes.
Reduce participation in the underground economy
You take part in the underground economy if you do not report all of your income on your tax return or pay the proper amount of sales tax on your purchases. The underground economy puts an unfair tax burden on all law-abiding Canadians.
The law allows the Canada Revenue Agency to get infomation from a variety of sources. This information allows the Canada Revenue Agency to identify, track, and assess participants in the underground economy. The Canada Revenue Agency has both advanced data analysis capabilities and legal tools to uncover unreported income. These tools give the Canada Revenue Agency the intelligence it needs to focus on a particular compliance problem or a particular industry or taxpayer where non-compliance has been found.
Use responsible enforcement
There are a number of compliance programs for suspected cases of tax evasion, fraud, and other tax offences.
The Canada Revenue Agency can seek legal action against an individual or company for breaking the tax law. Violators could pay fines, lose their business or their home, and even go to jail. Court convictions will be publicized in local, regional and national media.
