Educators – Tax Resources and Financial Literacy

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers free educational products about taxes. They are easy to teach and understand.
Educator-led products
Teaching Taxes
Students learn:
- the basics of taxation
- why they pay taxes and how these taxes are used
- their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers
- how to complete a simple tax return
The learning material
- Teacher's manual and student workbook
- 180 minutes of in‑class instruction
- Can be used in economics, accounting, business, mathematics, consumer education, social studies, and second language courses
Responsible Citizenship and Canada's Tax System
Students learn:
- where their tax dollars go
- about the relationship between taxes and our quality of life in Canada
- about the underground economy, its impact on our society, and how it affects them personally
The learning material
- Uses the learning-focused model
- Has a wide range of teaching and learning preferences that can be adapted to fit instructional plans
- 180 minutes of in‑class instruction
- Can be used alone or as an introduction to Teaching Taxes
Self-teaching product
Learning About Taxes
The CRA offers a free online self‑teaching product designed for anyone to use. This self‑paced learning module:
- introduces you to Canada's tax system
- helps you understand why you pay taxes and how these taxes are used
- teaches you how to complete a simple tax return
- takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete
