All the information you need to calculate your Yukon tax and credits is included on the following pages. You will find two copies of Form YT428, Yukon Tax, Form YT432, Yukon First Nations Tax, and Form YT479, Yukon Credits, in this book. Complete the forms that apply to you and attach a copy to your return.

What's new for 2001?

The way you calculate your Yukon tax has changed. It is no longer a percentage of federal income tax. Yukon tax will now be calculated by applying territorial tax rates to taxable income (line 260 of your return). Yukon non-refundable tax credits are then deducted from this amount.

The Yukon research and development tax credit is now available to self employed individuals who made eligible expenditures in Yukon.

Form YT428, Yukon Tax, reflects these changes.

Yukon Child Benefit

The Yukon Child Benefit (YCB) is a tax-free monthly payment to help low- and modest-income families with the cost of raising children under age 18. Benefits are combined with the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) into a single monthly payment.

Under the YCB, you may be entitled to receive a benefit of $25 per month for each child. Families with net income above $16,700 may receive part of the benefit.

You do not have to apply separately to receive payments under this program. We will use the information from the CCTB application to determine your eligibility for the program. You (and your spouse or common-law partner) should file your 2001 tax return(s) as soon as possible. The information you (and your spouse or common-law partner) give on your return(s) will determine how much you will receive starting in July 2002.

This program is funded by the Yukon with a contribution from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada on behalf of Status Indian children. For more information call 1-800-387-1193.

Did you reside on Yukon First Nations settlement land?

If you resided on settlement land of an agreeing Yukon First Nation at the end of the year, enter the First Nation name and identification number on page 1 of your return.

Complete Form YT432, Yukon First Nations Tax, to determine the part of federal and territorial tax that is transferred to the Yukon First Nation government responsible for the settlement land where you resided. Attach a completed copy to your paper return.
