Payments for those who have not yet filed tax returns for the applicable years

On March 15, 2025, the Government of Canada stopped the federal fuel charge and the CCR for individuals. There will be no further quarterly CCR payments after the April 2025 payment.

This rebate was available to individuals who:

The applicable tax years were:

  • 2024
  • 2023
  • 2022
  • 2021

If you were eligible but you have not yet filed your tax return for 2024, 2023, 2022, or 2021, you are still able to receive your payments once your tax returns are assessed.

There were 2 parts to the CCR, a basic amount and a rural supplement.

How to get the CCR basic amount for applicable tax years

How you can get the CCR for the tax years 2024, 2023, 2022, or 2021 depends on whether you were a resident of Canada or a newcomer.

If you were a resident of Canada

Residents of Canada don’t need to apply to receive the CCR. They need to file their income tax and benefit return for the tax years 2024, 2023, 2022, or 2021 and we will send them the payments they are entitled to.

If you had a spouse or common-law partner, only one of you can get the payment for the family. It will usually be paid to the person whose tax return is assessed first. No matter which one of you receives the payment, the amount will be the same.

In order to receive the CCR for an applicable tax year, you must file an income tax and benefit return for that applicable tax year even if you had no income to report.

Generally, you had to be 19 years of age or older to get the CCR. If you turned 19 years of age before January, make sure that you file your prior year income tax and benefit return. The CRA will automatically determine your eligibility for the CCR.

If you were a newcomer to Canada

If you were a new resident of Canada, follow the steps below to apply for the CCR.

  1. Complete the following form(s):

How to claim the CCR rural supplement for applicable tax payers

The CCR includes a supplement for residents of small and rural communities. To claim the rural supplement you must tick the box on page 2 of your income tax and benefit returns for 2024, 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Individuals from Prince Edward Island

As the rural supplement was already included in the basic amount for Prince Edward Island, individuals from that province don’t have to claim it on their tax return.

Individuals from New Brunswick

The 2022 rural supplement question for residents of small and rural communities from New Brunswick is on the 2023 income tax and benefit return and a retroactive payment can be issued for the 2022 base year.

The supplement is issued to the spouse or common-law partner who files their return first and is included with the CCR basic amount. Therefore, if you and your spouse or common-law partner were both residents of a small and rural communities, you should both complete the question on page 2 of your income tax and benefit return to avoid delays.
