Contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) after you apply for the Working income tax benefit

You should contact the CRA after you apply for the WITB when:

  1. You have changed your address
  2. You have changed your marital status
  3. Any of the following situations apply:
    • You receive your payments by direct deposit and your banking information has changed
    • You or your spouse or common-law partner no longer meet the WITB eligibility requirements
    • You or your spouse or common-law partner's income changed significantly
    • You ceased to be a resident of Canada

1. You have changed your address
If you move, be sure to let the CRA know. Otherwise, your payments may stop, even if you use direct deposit and your bank account doesn't change. See How to change your address.

2. You have changed your marital status
If your marital status has changed, you must inform the CRA of your new status and the date of the change by the end of the month following the month in which your status changes. You can do this by calling 1-800-387-1193, completing and sending form RC65, Marital Status Change or by using “Change my marital status” on My Account on the CRA Web site. You may also provide the information by sending a letter to the tax centre that serves your area. Be sure your letter includes the date (day, month and year) of the marital status change, your name and social insurance number, along with your spouse or common-law partner’s name and social insurance number (if applicable).

Note: You are separated if you have been living apart from your spouse or common-law partner for 90 consecutive days or more because of a breakdown in your relationship, and you have not reconciled. Do not advise the CRA of your separation until you have been separated for more than 90 consecutive days.

3. Any of the following situations:

  • You receive your payments by direct deposit and your banking information has changed
  • You or your spouse or common-law partner no longer meet the WITB eligibility requirements
  • You or your spouse or common-law partner's income changed significantly
  • You ceased to be a resident of Canada

Call 1-800-959-8281 to tell the CRA about the changes described above.
