March 17, 2016
- It’s tax time and we have valuable information for you
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is here to help you during tax season. Here’s some information you should know about your taxes, including ways to save money at tax time.
- It’s tax time: Don’t panic. There is free tax help.
Even if you have little or no income, you should still file your income tax and benefit return—you may be eligible for credits and benefits. Filing a return is the key to getting your goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit and the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB), among others. Whether you are completing your tax return by yourself, or getting help from someone else, the CRA and its community partners are here to help you.
- Newly married? Living common-law? Recently divorced or separated? How your marital status impacts your taxes
If your marital status changes, it’s important to let the CRA know as soon as possible. You should contact the CRA when there is a change in your life such as a new address, a new child, or a change in your direct deposit information to ensure you receive the correct benefits and credits.
- Did you buy a home in 2015?
If you bought your home in 2015, the CRA has tax credits and a program that may help you save money.
- Video: First-time donor's super credit
Did you give to a charity for the first time in 2015? You may be eligible for the new first-time donor's super credit. That's in addition to the regular tax credit for charitable donations! Watch this video to learn more.
