How to register for My Account

Register

  1. Go to the My Account page on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website: www.cra.gc.ca/myaccount.
    Tip: You will need your: social insurance number, date of birth, current postal code, and tax returns (this year and last).
  2. Use step "A" or "B".
    1. To use a user ID and password that you already have, such as for online banking, choose the Sign-In Partner option.
      Tip: This option means one less user ID and password to remember!
      Select your sign-in partner.
      Fill in some personal information, including the amount on one of the lines of your income tax return.
    2. To create a CRA user ID and password, select the "CRA Register" button.
      We'll ask you for some personal information, including the amount on one of the lines of your income tax return.
      Create a user ID, password, and set up your own security questions and answers.
      We need to make sure it's really you.

Access your account

  1. Check your mailbox for a CRA envelope containing your security code.
    Tip: To help make sure your account is completely secure, we send you a security code in the mail. We'll mail it to the address we have on file for you, so be sure we have your most recent address. The security code should arrive within 5-10 days.
  2. After you receive your security code, log in to My Account on the CRA website and enter your security code.
  3. Now you can handle your tax matters online using My Account.

How to register for My Business Account

Register

  1. Go to the My Business Account page on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website: www.cra.gc.ca/mybusinessaccount.
    Tip: You will need your social insurance number, your personal income tax returns from this year and last year, your personal postal code, and your business number.
  2. Use step "A" or "B".
    1. To use a user ID and password that you already have, such as for online banking, choose the "Sign-In Partner" option.

How to register for Represent a Client to access information for family members or friends

Register

  1. Go to the Represent a Client page on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website: www.cra.gc.ca/representatives.
    Tip: You will need your: personal postal code, and access code from your personal notice of assessment.
  2. Use step "A" or "B".
    1. To use a user ID and password that you already have, such as for online banking, choose the "Sign-In Partner" option.
      Tip: This option means one less user ID and password to remember.
      Select the sign-in partner you would like to use to sign in.
      Enter your access code and home postal code.
    2. To create a CRA user ID and password, choose the "CRA Register" button.
      Enter your access code and home postal code.
      Follow the instructions to create your security questions and answers.
      We need to be sure it's really you. You'll find your access code at the top right of your personal notice of assessment.
  3. Select "yourself" to register as a representative and enter some personal information.
  4. You will be given a RepID. Write it down for your records.
    Tip: The RepID identifies you as a registered representative with the CRA. Give it to your family member or friend so they can authorize you to access their tax account.

Get authorized by your family member or friend

  1. Search for form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative at www.cra.gc.ca.
    Tip: If your family member or friend is registered in My Account, they can authorize you online to give you instant access.
  2. Give your family member or friend your RepID number and ask them to complete and sign the form.
  3. Mail the form to the nearest tax centre shown on the form.
  4. After the CRA processes the form, your family member or friend will receive a letter in the mail confirming that you are representing them.
  5. Log in to Represent a Client and enter your family member's or friend's social insurance number.
  6. Now you can handle your family member's or friend's tax matters online using Represent a Client.

How to register a group to access your employer's business accounts

Register yourself

  1. Go to the Represent a Client page on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website: www.cra.gc.ca/representatives and choose the "CRA Register" button.
    Tip: You will need your: access code from your personal notice of assessment, and personal postal code.
  2. Enter your access code and personal postal code.
    Tip: You'll find your access code at the top right of your personal notice of assessment.
  3. Create a CRA user ID and password, and set up your security questions and answers.
  4. Select "yourself" to register as a representative and then enter your personal information.
  5. You will be given a RepID. Write it down for your records.
    Tip: A RepID identifies you as a registered representative with the CRA. Give it to your employer to authorize you.

Create a group

  1. Select the "Review and Update" link.
  2. Select "Create a Group."
    Tip: You are automatically the administrator because you set up the group.
  3. Enter the name of the group and the contact information.
    Tip: For example, "Accounting Department."
  4. You will be given a GroupID to write down for your records.
    Tip: The GroupID identifies a group of registered representatives, who use it to access the business's tax accounts online.

Add representatives to the GroupID

  1. Select "Associate Representatives."
  2. Select the role you want for the employees and enter their RepIDs.
  3. Repeat the association process to add different types of roles as needed.

Get your GroupID authorized by your employer

  1. Search for form RC59, Business Consent at www.cra.gc.ca.
  2. Ask your employer to complete the form to authorize your group for online access with the name of the group and the GroupID. Make sure the form includes the business name and number, the program accounts, and authorization level the group should have.
    Tip: Examples of program accounts are payroll deductions (RP) or GST/HST (RT).
  3. Make sure your employer signs the form, then mail or fax it to the nearest tax centre shown on the form.
    Tip: A business owner, partner, president, or someone on the board of directors can sign the form.
  4. After the CRA processes the form, your employer will receive a letter confirming the group is authorized.
    Tip: You can add and remove employees using Represent a Client without having to fill out another form.

Access your employer's tax accounts

  1. All employees of the group can log in to Represent a Client and enter the business number.
    Tip: You'll be able to view all employees' transactions that are associated with the GroupID.
  2. Now you can handle your employer's tax matters online using Represent a Client.

How to register your accounting, payroll, or tax preparation business so your clients can authorize your business to represent them

Register your business

  1. Go to the Represent a Client page at www.cra.gc.ca/representatives and choose the "CRA Register" button.
    Tip: You will need your: access code from your personal notice of assessment, personal postal code, and business number.
  2. Enter your access code and personal postal code.
    Tip: You'll find your access code at the top right of your personal notice of assessment.
  3. Create a CRA user ID and password, and set up your security questions and answers.
  4. Select "business" to register as a representative.
    Tip: Only the business owner, partner, or director can register the business with Represent a Client.
  5. Enter your business number and some personal information.
  6. Your business is now registered as a representative.
    Tip: Give your business number to your clients so they can authorize your business to represent them.

Employees register to get a RepID

  1. Now each employee needs to register to get a RepID. Ask your employees to register and give you their RepID so you can associate them to your business.
    Tip: The RepID identifies the employee as a registered representative with the CRA and is necessary for them to access client accounts online.

Associate your employees to your business so they can access your clients' accounts

  1. Log in to Represent a Client and choose the "Review and Update" link.
  2. Select the business name and then the "Manage employees' access" tab.
  3. Select the "Associate employees" link.
  4. Choose the type of access you want your employees to have.
  5. Enter the RepIDs for each employee and repeat this process as needed.

Have your clients authorize your business

  1. Search for form RC59, Business Consent or form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative at www.cra.gc.ca.
  2. Ask your client to fill out the form and authorize your business/firm name and number for online access.
  3. Once your client has signed the form, send it to the CRA.
    Tip: You can send the T1013 form using EFILE to get instant access.
  4. Your client will receive a letter from the CRA stating that they have authorized your business.
    Tip: When your client authorizes your business, all employees associated with your business number will have access to your client's accounts. You'll be able to see your employees' transactions and client lists in the "Review and update" section of Represent a Client.

Access a client account

  1. Log in to Represent a Client and enter the business number or social insurance number you want to access.
  2. Now your business can handle your clients' tax matters online using Represent a Client.

How to register yourself to access client accounts as an employee of an accounting firm, payroll service provider, or tax preparation business

    Tip: New clients will need to fill out an authorization form (T1013 for individuals or RC59 for businesses).

  1. Log in to Represent a Client and enter your client's social insurance number or business number.
  2. Now you can handle your clients' tax matters online using Represent a Client.

How to register yourself as an employee to access your employer's business accounts
