Record of Employment (ROE)
Generally, if you are issuing an ROE electronically, you have five calendar days after the end of the pay period in which an employee’s interruption of earnings occurs to issue it. This is considered an interruption of service and includes situations where employment ends or the employee leaves because of pregnancy, injury, illness, adoption leave, layoff, leave without pay, or dismissal. For more information, see What should you do if an employee leaves?.
Note
A different deadline may apply if you file your ROE on paper.
The employee needs the ROE to determine if he or she is entitled to employment insurance (EI) benefits. To create an ROE for your employee, you can use Service Canada’s online ROE web service, your payroll provider’s ROE Secure Automated Transmission, or fill out a paper Record of Employment (ROE).
For more information on the ROE, go to Service Canada at The Record of Employment on the Web (ROE Web), or call their Employer Contact Centre at 1-800-367-5693 (TTY: 1-855-881-9874).
