If a covered softwood lumber product is exported to the United States from a region in a particular month, the amount of the charge in respect of that export is the amount calculated by applying the rate applicable for the month to the export price of the product. For more information on the applicable rates and its determination, refer to sub-sections 12 (3), (4) and (5) of the Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006.

Option A regions, subject to an export charge, include AB, BC coast and BC interior. The regions of British Columbia interior and British Columbia coast are defined in the British Columbia Forest Regions and Districts Regulations.

Option B regions, subject to an export charge and volume restraint, include SK, MB, ON and QC.

Footnote 1

Foreign Affairs and International Trade's published reports indicate that exports to the United States of softwood lumber products originating from the noted Option A region has exceeded the trigger volume by more than 1 percent. As a result the export charge rate is increased by 50 percent (50%). The surge charge is applicable to all softwood lumber product exports originating from the region for the month.

Effective March 1, 2011, additional export charges of 0.1% for Ontario and 2.6% for Quebec are imposed under amendments to the Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006. For more information, see notice SWLN35, Additional Export Charges for Ontario and Quebec Regions.
