Tools and services for charities
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) assists registered charities in meeting their obligations under the Income Tax Act in many different ways. The following are some of the tools and services it offers to charities across Canada.
Charities Information Sessions
The CRA offers its Charities Information Sessions every year to charitable organizations in all regions across Canada. The topics covered in 2008 include filing requirements, disbursement quota, fundraising, receipting, GST/HST, and a sector overview.
In addition, the CRA offers Special Charities Information Sessions for charities that are holding an annual meeting, a conference, a training session, or a special meeting, and would like a CRA representative to speak. These sessions include a wide range of topics that cover the day-to-day operations of charities.
Electronic and telephone services
The newly redesigned and enhanced Charities and Giving Web site (www.cra.gc.ca/charities) offers a comprehensive and up-to-date suite of information products for charities and donors, including a listing of all registered charities and alerts on donation-related fraud schemes, as well as access to all charities-related forms and publications, and important contact information. A number of forms are available, including Form T3010A, Registered Charity Information Return .
Charities who want to stay informed can also access the registered charities newsletters online and subscribe to the CRA's charities electronic mailing list.
For information about registered charities, the CRA also offers a telephone line at 1-800-267-2384, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Charities Partnership and Outreach Program
The Charities Partnership and Outreach Program (CPOP) provides funding in support of innovative projects designed to increase charitable sector compliance with relevant parts of the Income Tax Act.
To date, the CRA has funded six projects. The first two projects to receive funding are intended to provide education and training to the charitable sector regarding its legal obligations under the Income Tax Act and, in particular, with Form T3010A, Registered Charity Information Return . The CRA has recently funded four additional projects that will provide education and training to charities on conducting foreign activities in compliance with the Income Tax Act, as well as fundraising, receipting, and maintaining proper books and records.
For more information about the CPOP and other services offered by the CRA, visit www.cra.gc.ca/charities, or call 1-800-267-2384.
