Canada Child Tax Benefit
July, 2000
The Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) combines a basic benefit amount and the National Child Benefit Supplement (NCBS) for low income families. In July 2000, the CCTB basic amount increases by up to $7.00 per month per child (the rate varies in Alberta) and the NCBS increases by up to $16.00 per month per child. Families whose net income is under $21,214 will receive the maximum NCBS. Families with income between $21,214 and $30,004 will receive a partial NCBS. This will extend the CCTB to an additional 100,000 families.
The following chart lists the maximum monthly CCTB amount available as of July 2000 for families with net income under $21,214.
Family Size | Basic MonthlyCCTB Amount (the rate varies in Alberta) | Monthly NCBS |
Total Monthly CCTB |
---|---|---|---|
1st child | $92.00 | $81.41 | $173.41 |
2nd child | $92.00 | $64.25 | $156.25 |
3rd child | $98.42 | $57.80 | $156.22 |
each additional child | $98.42 | $57.80 | $156.22 |
Parents who receive the CCTB and their spouses must each file an Income Tax and Benefit Return on time each year to receive or continue to receive the CCTB. The payments issued in July are calculated using income and family information provided on the 1999 Income Tax and Benefit Return.
Recipients should advise the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) immediately of any changes to their address or family situation. If the CCRA is not advised of their new address, their payments may be interrupted even if they receive them by direct deposit and their bank account does not change.
It is important that CCTB recipients keep their July notice for reference purposes. By doing so, they will help ensure that any enquiries they have about the CCTB and certain related provincial and territorial programs can be handled quickly and efficiently by all levels of government.
