TELEFILE: Filing a Tax Return from Home

Starting this tax-filing season, Revenue Canada is offering a fast and convenient national service called TELEFILE that allows individuals to file their tax returns from home.

Filing a return with TELEFILE is as easy as making a phone call. All taxfilers need is a telephone with touch tone service. They simply fill in the information on their tax form and call the toll-free number. From there, they follow automated voice directions to enter the information using the telephone keypad. TELEFILE completes all of the calculations. When they have finished entering the data, TELEFILE confirms the information and gives them a confirmation number. Filing a return this way should take between 5 and 10 minutes.

TELEFILE is secure and confidential. With TELEFILE, taxfilers don't have to mail their return to Revenue Canada, and they should receive their assessment notice-and refund if they are entitled to one-often within two weeks.

As TELEFILE accepts only certain income, deduction, and tax credit amounts, only certain taxfilers are eligible. Eligible users include wage earners, students, seniors, and credit and benefit filers. People who are eligible to use TELEFILE received an invitation and a TELEFILE access code in their personalized 1997 income tax package, along with an instruction sheet. To use TELEFILE, the name, address and social insurance number must be correct on the label included with each personalized return.

Revenue Canada successfully ran the TELEFILE service in New Brunswick for three years as a pilot project before launching it nationally. For the 1997 tax-filing season, millions of Canadians are eligible to use the service.

The TELEFILE service is available seven days a week from January 12 to April 30, 1998. Taxfilers can call from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. If they owe money, TELEFILE users can file before the deadline, but don't have to send their payment in until April 30.
