Strongfield man fined $72,018 and sentenced to a nine-month conditional jail term for tax evasion

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, December 7, 2015…The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced today that Ronald Glubis was sentenced, on November 12, 2015 in the Saskatoon Provincial Court, to a court-imposed fine of $72,018 and to a jail term of nine-months, to be served in the community. Under the terms of the Conditional Sentence Order (CSO), Mr. Glubis is under house arrest for the three months of the Order and must complete 50 hours of community service prior to the completion of the CSO.

A 12-month CRA investigation established that Mr. Glubis failed to report taxable income from his farm and tire business totalling $308,595 for the taxation years 2007 through 2009, thereby evading income tax of $70,793. Mr. Glubis also failed to report goods and services tax (GST) collected of $1,225 over the investigation period.

When individuals are convicted of income tax and GST evasion, they must still repay the full amount of taxes owing, plus interest and any civil penalties that may be assessed by the CRA. In addition, the court may fine them up to 200% of the taxes evaded and impose a jail term of up to five years.
