Dataville Farms Ltd. fined $40,540 for Harmonized Sales Tax Offence

Halifax, Nova Scotia, December 18, 2015… The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced today that Dataville Farms Ltd. of Halifax, Nova Scotia pleaded guilty on December 14, 2015 in Halifax Provincial Court to a tax evasion related offence under the Excise Tax Act and was sentenced to a court imposed fine of $40,540. The fine represents 100% of the total taxes evaded.

A 15‑month CRA investigation revealed that Dataville Farms Ltd. failed to report $40,540 of Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) related to rental income. During this investigation, the CRA also confirmed that a tenant of Dataville Farms Ltd. claimed an HST refund of $40,540 related to this rent. The conviction relates to tax filings between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2012.
