Executive Summary

The Canada Revenue Agency is currently delivering its fourth Sustainable Development (SD) Strategy, spanning a three-year period 2007-2010. One of the targets in the strategy aims for 45 per cent of Canadians to recognize the CRA’s commitment to SD by March 31, 2010. This target was developed on the basis of the results from two public surveys that the CRA conducted prior to 2007.

The purpose of this study was to gauge current public awareness of CRA’s commitment to sustainable development and to help determine how to best communicate this commitment to Canadians. The research allowed the CRA to identify and guide activities for the next SD Strategy. It also helped the CRA determine its success in promoting itself as a responsible organization and helped the SD program identify its future communication opportunities and needs.

The methodology for the study involved a survey of 1,500 Canadians regarding their views on CRA’s commitment to sustainable development. The margin of error for a sample of this size is +/- 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. The data was weighted based on Statistics Canada data according to age, gender, and region to ensure that the sample is representative of the general public in Canada aged 18 years and over.

This research was contracted at $7,662.84 (GST included).

The key findings from the study are described in more detail in the remainder of this report.
