Our Change Objectives Objective 1

Transforming benefit programs

"Our ongoing commitment is to provide payments and credits on time, in the right amount, and to the right people."

More than half of all Canadian households receive some form of benefit payment from the CCRA. We administer the Canada Child Tax Benefit, Children's Special Allowance and the GST/HST credit programs. In addition, we administer separate income support programs for six provinces, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Our ongoing commitment is to provide payments and credits on time, in the right amount, and to the right people. We also continue to focus on maintaining a strong program delivery capacity, able to respond to changing government priorities and policies.

We will work to better align, coordinate and, if necessary, adjust various benefit and credit payments. Recipients will have to contact the CCRA only once to advise us of changes in their circumstances. We will be better able to ensure benefit recipients get what they are entitled to. This work will result in improved fairness and improved payment accuracy.

We will improve the ways in which we deliver benefit programs by providing more responsive and timely service to benefit clients while addressing the program challenges resulting from the changing eligibility requirements.

Approximately 3 million clients received the Canada Child Tax Benefit in 1999-2000.
