More information on the Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate
What’s new?
As of January 2017, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) administers the Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate and issue payments for the province of Alberta.
The Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate is a tax-free payment for low and middle income individuals and families. It will help households adjust to the new provincial carbon price.
Are you eligible?
To be eligible, you need to be a resident of Alberta on the first day of the payment period and the first day of the previous payment period. You must also meet at least one of these conditions during the same period:
-
you are 18 or older
-
you have (or previously had) a spouse or common-law partner
-
you are (or previously were) a parent and live (or previously lived) with your child
To get the rebate payment(s) for July 2017, October 2017, January 2018 and April 2018, you must have filed a 2016 income tax and benefit return. You have to file a return every year to continue to receive the rebate.
If you have a spouse or common-law partner, fill out the information about them in the Identification area on page 1 of your return. Include their net income, even if it is zero, and enter their social insurance number.
To get the forms you need to file your income tax return, go to the Alberta General Income Tax and Benefit Packages for 2016.
Do you have an eligible child?
You can get an additional amount if you have an eligible child and all of the following conditions are met at the beginning of the payment month:
-
your child is under 18 years of age
-
your child lives with you
-
you are primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of your child
-
your child is registered for the Canada child benefit
Do you need to apply?
You do not have to apply for the Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate. The Canada Revenue Agency will determine your eligibility when you file your income tax and benefit return and will send payments to everyone entitled to them. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, only one of you can receive the rebate. The rebate will be paid to the person whose return is assessed first.
If you have already registered your eligible child or children for the Canada child benefit, your child is already registered for the Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate.
If you have not registered your eligible child for the Canada child benefit, go to Canada child benefit - How to apply.
How much will you get?
The Canada Revenue Agency calculates your rebate amount for the 2017 benefit year based on your family situation and your adjusted family net income for 2016.
If you are single and your adjusted family net income is $47,500 or less, you may get:
-
$250 if you are a single individual with no children
-
$375 if you do not have a spouse or common-law partner, but have full custody of an eligible child plus:
-
$37.50 per each additional child under 18 (to a maximum of four children)
-
If you have a spouse or common-law partner and your adjusted family net income is $95,000 or less, you may get:
-
$375 plus:
-
$37.50 for each child under 18 (to a maximum of four children)
If you would like an estimate of what your payment might be, go to Child and family benefits calculator.
Note
If your quarterly entitlement amount is less than $25, you will not get a payment.
When will you get payments?
The Canada Revenue Agency will normally send payments on January 5, April 5, July 5 and October 5.
Payments will be sent separately from other benefit and credit payments.
If you already get your GST/HST credit payments by direct deposit, you will also get your rebate payments by direct deposit. If you are eligible for the rebate but have not received your payment, wait 10 working days from the payment date and call 1-800-959-2809.
