The Canada Revenue Agency administers child and family benefit programs on behalf of Alberta.

Alberta family employment tax credit

The Alberta family employment tax credit (AFETC) is a tax-free amount paid to families that have working income and children under 18 years of age.

For July 2017 to June 2018, you may be entitled to receive:

  • $773 ($64.41 per month) for the first child
  • $703 ($58.58 per month) for the second child
  • $422 ($35.16 per month) for the third child
  • $140 ($11.66 per month) for the fourth child

The most you can get is the lesser of $2,038 and 11% of your family's working income that is more than $2,760.

The credit is reduced by 4% of the amount of the adjusted family net income that is more than $41,786. Payments are made separately from the CCB payments in July 2017 and January 2018.

This program is fully funded by the Alberta provincial government.

Alberta child benefit

The Alberta child benefit (ACB) is a tax-free amount paid to families that have children under 18 years of age and an annual family net income below $41,750. Unlike the Alberta Family Employment Tax Credit (AFETC), there is no minimum working income requirement.

For July 2017 to June 2018, you may be entitled to receive:

  • $1,114 ($92.83 per month) for the first child
  • $557 ($46.41 per month) for the second child
  • $557 ($46.41 per month) for the third child
  • $557 ($46.41 per month) for the fourth child

The benefit is reduced as family income exceeds $25,832. If your adjusted family net income is between $25,832 and $41,750, you may receive a partial benefit.

Payments are made separately from the CCB and AFETC payments. ACB payments are made in August, November, February and May.

Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate

The Alberta climate leadership adjustment rebate (ACLAR) is a tax-free amount paid to low and middle income individuals and families. It is intended to help households adjust to the new provincial carbon price.

The first payment to qualifying individuals and families was issued on January 5, 2017.

For July 2017 to June 2018, you may be entitled to receive:

  • $250 if you are a single individual with no children
  • $375 if you have a spouse or common-law partner
  • $375 if you do not have a spouse or common-law partner, but have full custody of an eligible child

plus

  • $37.50 per additional child under 18 years of age (to a maximum of 4 children)

For single individuals with no children, the rebate is reduced by 2.67% of adjusted family net income over $47,500. For families, the credit is reduced by 4.0% of adjusted family net income over $95,000.

Payments are made in July, October, January and April separately from the GST/HST credit payments.

The program is fully funded by the Alberta provincial government.
