Find out if you qualify for the supplement for residents of small and rural communities

Residents of New Brunswick will begin to receive their rural supplement starting in April 2024. The payment will include a retroactive rural supplement amount for the July 2023 to January 2024 period as well.

The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) includes a 20% supplement for residents of small and rural communities. The supplement applies only to residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia whose primary residence is outside a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), and they expect to continue to reside outside the same CMA on April 1, 2024.

Starting in April 2024 for the 2023 base year, the rural supplement will be increased to 20% of the base amount. Note that this increase is pending Royal Assent.

All CCR recipients of Prince Edward Island are eligible for the rural supplement and it is included in their basic amount.

Follow the steps below to find out if you qualify:

  1. In the tables below, find the CMA closest to your primary residence.
  2. Use the corresponding list of municipalities and map to find your primary residence. You can zoom in to the map to view street address details.
  3. If your primary residence is located:
    • outside all listed municipalities or outside the shaded area of a map, you are considered to be residing outside a CMA and you do qualify for the supplement. Tick the box on page 2 of your income tax and benefit return.
    • within a listed municipality or within the shaded area, you are considered to live within a CMA and you do not qualify for the supplement. Do not tick the box on page 2.
