Regina man fined and sentenced to jail term for tax fraud

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced that Jason Damon Scott (also known as Michael Jason Scott), age 39, of Regina, Saskatchewan, was sentenced on January 30, 2019, in the Regina Provincial Court, to a court-imposed fine of $41,556 for tax fraud and a jail term of seven months. In addition to the court imposed fine, Jason Scott will also have to pay the full amount of tax owing, plus related interest and any penalties assessed by the CRA.
A 15‑month CRA investigation revealed that Mr. Scott attempted to obtain refunds by filing income tax returns that contained fraudulent employment information slips. Mr. Scott also filed GST returns using non-existent companies to claim fraudulent GST refunds. On June 11, 2015, Mr. Scott pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain fraudulent income tax refunds totalling $23,025 for 2007 to 2010. In addition, Mr. Scott pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain fraudulent GST refunds totalling $18,531 for 2007 to 2010.
